Point-to-Ellipsoid

POLI(Point-to-Ellipsoid)는 점군을 입력받아 점별 공분산을 예측하는 신경망입니다.

English summary

From samples to geometry

Sparse LiDAR measurements depend strongly on resolution and viewpoint. This work separates those observations from the surface they describe, modeling local geometry as a statistical manifold of Gaussian distributions.

The POLI estimator

Point-to-Ellipsoid predicts a covariance for each point. A probabilistic objective connects corresponding observations across views while accounting for imperfect relative poses. Training requires correspondences and reasonably accurate pose observations, but no dense geometry labels. The resulting ellipsoids can supply geometry to existing perception pipelines or support scan augmentation.

Evidence and limitations

Evaluation covers object pose estimation, LiDAR odometry, and global registration. In the HeLiPR DCC experiment reported in Table IV, POLI augmentation reduces GLIM translation APE from 56.94 m to 35.61 m. Gains vary across settings and can decrease under distribution shift. Covariances also provide a low-order local representation rather than directly encoding surface curvature.
